What is the spiritual significance of seeking validation from others?

Do we do it because we feel so wrong that we need somebody, anybody to tell us that we are right or good or worthy of love? Do we do it out of envy, when we see others getting attention that we don't? Is it because of fear of truly facing the inner self and accepting our darkness along with our light? All of things? Is there something else? What can we all do to know that we are beautiful souls, all connected to the pure energy of love (God)?
